Installing a new plugin is an essential step in enhancing the functionality of your WordPress site. In this guide, we explain step by step how to install a WordPress plugin, whether from the official WordPress plugin directory or from a trusted third-party site.

Before installing a plugin, it is important to choose the one that best meets your specific needs. Explore the various options available on the WordPress plugin directory or on reputable third-party sites, considering the features, compatibility, and user reviews.

Installing a Plugin from the WordPress Plugin Directory

Access the WordPress Dashboard

Log in to your WordPress dashboard as an administrator using your credentials.

Access the “Plugins” > “Add New” Section

In the left-hand menu, click on “Plugins,” then click on “Add New.” You will be directed to the plugin addition page of your site.

Search for the Plugin

Use the search bar to find the plugin you want to install. Browse through the results and click on “Install Now” next to the desired plugin.

Activate the Plugin

Once the installation is complete, click on “Activate” to activate the plugin on your site. You will be redirected to the installed plugins page where you can see the newly activated plugin.

Configuration and Usage

Depending on the plugin you have installed, additional configuration may be required. Refer to the plugin documentation to understand how to use and configure it according to your needs.

Installing a Plugin from a Third-Party Site

Downloading the Plugin

If you have downloaded a plugin from a trusted third-party site, make sure it is compatible with your version of WordPress and is secure. Download the plugin’s zip file to your computer.

Adding the Plugin via the WordPress Dashboard

  1. Go to the “Plugins” > “Add New” section in the WordPress dashboard.
  2. Click on “Upload Plugin” at the top of the page.
  3. Select the zip file of the plugin you downloaded.
  4. Click on “Install Now” to start the installation process.
  5. Once the installation is complete, activate the plugin by clicking on “Activate.”

Activation via FTP

If you have access to your server via FTP, you can also upload the plugin folder directly to the wp-content/plugins/ directory of your WordPress installation. Once the upload is complete, activate the plugin from the WordPress dashboard.
